Sale of city land in Perrysburg can be win-win situation for all

3/2/2005

I am compelled to respond to the letter "Council members against sale displayed common sense." The fact is the City of Buffalo and the State of New York have been in negotiation for the disposal and sale of the J.N. Adam Developmental Center since 1993, when the Perrysburg property was in remarkable condition. In 1999 and again in 2003, the sale of this property was well advertised and solicited to potential plan developers, with very little response. At that time and still today, the city has not exercised the right to regain ownership.

I have a solid plan to restore and manage this property, which is not an old growth forest. This plan does not include clear cutting.

With a good plan, hard work and proven environmentally responsible management techniques, this can be a win-win scenario for the fine people of Perrysburg, the City of Buffalo, my organization and, most importantly, the environment. It is Gov. George Pataki's plan to take these unused properties and put them in the private sector to stop the steady drain of our tax dollars. Pataki, the mayor of Buffalo and the supporting Common Council voters have the best vision.

Thomas S. Trathen

President, Trathen Land Co.

There is a quality even meaner than outright ugliness or disorder, and this meaner quality is the dishonest mask
of pretended order, achieved by ignoring or suppressing the real order that is struggling to exist and to be served.
